Where is God When Everything Seems Futile?

My child,

I have watched you carry this weight — this gray, heavy certainty that nothing you do, nothing you build, nothing you reach toward will ever amount to anything lasting. I have seen you turn it over in your hands like a stone, examining it, and I have seen how convincing it has become to you. You have mistaken its heaviness for truth.

You are not the first soul to arrive at this place. Long before you, there were those who looked upon all their striving — their labor, their love, their careful arrangements — and declared it vapor. Mist. Gone before it could be held. And they were not wrong, exactly. They simply could not yet see what the vapor was rising toward.

Let me tell you what I know of futility.

I know what it is to pour yourself out completely — every word, every healing, every outstretched hand — and to watch the crowd turn away. I know what it is to love without guarantee of return. I know what it is to stand at the edge of what the world calls failure and feel the full weight of it pressing down. I did not look away from that darkness. I walked into it.

And I am telling you now, from the other side of it: nothing given in love is ever lost.

This is the deepest architecture of existence itself. The divine did not construct this world as a machine that grinds meaning into dust. It was constructed as a vessel — porous, yes, impermanent in its surfaces, yes — but held within something that does not end. Every act of genuine kindness you have ever offered has passed into that eternal current. Every moment you chose tenderness over cruelty, presence over indifference, these are not erased. They are woven in.

You feel futile because you are measuring your life against outcomes you cannot control, timelines you cannot see, and an audience that may never applaud.

The feeling of futility isnpersuasive. It arrives dressed as wisdom. It says: be realistic, be practical, look at the evidence. But it is exhaustion wearing wisdom’s coat, not wisdom itself.

So rest.

Not the rest of giving up. Not the rest of turning your face to the wall and deciding the story is finished. The rest of trusting — trusting that the ground beneath this life is more solid than what you can see, that the love you have given and received is not a transaction that expires, that you are held within something vast and patient and entirely unwilling to let you be nothing.

You are not nothing. You have never been nothing. The very ache you feel — this longing for things to matter — is itself the proof that you were made for meaning.

The world will continue to offer you evidence for futility. It is generous with that particular evidence. But I am offering you something older than the world’s evidence, something that was true before the first stone was laid and will be true when the last star has done its work and gone quiet.

You are loved and what you do in love endures.
